Biography of the late Mwarandu

Birth and Early Life

Shadrack Karisa Mwarandu was born to the late Mwarandu wa Toya and the late Kada Mbodze on 15th April, 1944, at Ganda village in Malindi, Kilifi County. Growing up in the rich cultural heartland of the Giriama community alongside his brothers, the late Charo, Furaha, and Kazungu, Shadrackโ€™s early life was deeply shaped by the traditions of his elders. He was baptized at the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) St. Andrew's Parish, Malindi, as a young boy, blending his Christian faith with a deep-seated respect for his communityโ€™s heritage. From his youth, he was known for his sharp memory, natural leadership, and love for storytelling and traditional Giriama music.

Education

Shadrack began his education at Ganda Primary School in 1952, eventually sitting for his primary examinations in 1959. He was then admitted to Ribe Boys' Secondary School, where he studied from 1960 to 1963, excelling in history and languages. Driven by a desire to uplift his community, he proceeded to Shanzu Teachers Training College in Mombasa, where he graduated with a Certificate in Education. Throughout his life, he pursued further community development and education certificates, always looking for ways to bring knowledge back to his people.

Professional Career

Mr. Mwarandu dedicated over 35 years of his life to education, starting as a primary school teacher and eventually rising to serve as the Headteacher of several schools across Kilifi County, including Kakuyuni and Gede Primary Schools. He was widely respected for his strict discipline, his mentorship of young educators, and his commitment to securing bursaries for underprivileged children. Upon his retirement from public service, he transitioned fully into community elderhood and agricultural pursuits. He became a passionate, modern farmer, managing large cashew nut, coconut (Mnazi), and maize investments on his ancestral land in Ganda.

Marriage

Shadrack was married to his beloved wife, Emily Choni. Together, they were blessed with three children: Katana Karisa, Mbodze Karisa, and Harrison Toya Karisa. He raised his family with a strong emphasis on hard work, education, and respect for their Giriama identity and Christian values.

Religious & Community Life

A faithful Christian, Shadrackโ€™s spiritual life was centered at ACK St. Andrew's Ganda, where he was a dedicated member and served as a lay leader and advisor to the churchโ€™s elders' council. Beyond the church, Shadrack was a highly respected "Kaya" patron and community arbitrator. He sat on the local Council of Elders, resolving disputes, presiding over cultural festivals, and ensuring that the wisdom, folklore, and customs of the Giriama people were passed down to younger generations. His voice was a pillar of peace and unity in Ganda.

Health and Final Lap

Throughout most of his life, Shadrack was an active, resilient man who walked daily to check on his farms. However, in late 2024, he began to experience recurring mobility challenges and general fatigue. Despite medical interventions at various hospitals in Mombasa and Malindi, his health gradually declined due to age-related illnesses. He spent his final months quietly at his home in Ganda, surrounded by the ocean breeze, the shade of his coconut palms, and the loving care of his wife Emily, his children, and grandchildren.

He peacefully went to be with the Lord on 19th October 2026 at 11:00 AM. His body was moved to Kilifi County Referral Hospital Mortuary.

Fare thee well, Mzee Shadrack. You fought the good fight, you have finished your earthly race, and you have kept the faith. Rest in eternal peace.
